What is a Beaver Colony?
A Beaver Colony is the first and youngest section of the Scout Group at 1st Dinas Powys, welcoming children aged between 6 and 8 years old12. This section is designed to introduce young people to the world of Scouting through a variety of fun and engaging activities.
What Do Beavers Do?
Beavers meet regularly, usually once a week, to participate in a wide range of activities that help them develop new skills, make friends, and build confidence. Here are some of the typical activities Beavers enjoy:
- Outdoor Adventures: Exploring nature, going on short hikes, and participating in outdoor games.
- Creative Projects: Engaging in arts and crafts, building models, and other hands-on activities.
- Games and Sports: Playing team games, learning new sports, and enjoying physical activities.
- Community Involvement: Taking part in community service projects and learning about helping others.
- Badge Work: Earning badges for completing various challenges and learning new skills13.
Leadership and Structure
Each Beaver Colony is led by adult volunteers, often referred to by nicknames inspired by nature, books, or films4. These leaders are dedicated to creating a safe and supportive environment where Beavers can thrive. The Colony is structured to ensure that every Beaver has the opportunity to participate fully and enjoy their Scouting experience.
Moving Up
As Beavers approach the age of 8, they begin to prepare for their transition to the next section of the Scout Group, the Cub Scouts. This progression is designed to be smooth and exciting, marking the next step in their Scouting journey12.
Joining a Beaver Colony is just the beginning of a young person’s adventure in Scouting. It’s a place where they can try new things, make new friends, and start building the skills that will serve them throughout their lives.
